The ultimate driving simulator?
The ultimate driving simulator?
One of the most advanced driving simulator for racing cars is located in Cologne, Germany. It's been developed by Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) as a tool for their Formula 1 engineering, but it now features a range of different race cars (F1, GP2, Super GT and Le Mans Prototype) and about 20 circuits (Nürburging Nordschleife, Le Mans, etc...). TMG has now opened its facility to race teams for their virtual testing under the most realistic conditions.
The circuits have been modelled with an amazing precision: a laser mapping defines the track surface with a horizontal resolution of 0.2mm and a vertical one of less than 1mm! Kerbs, background scenery and other details are of course on the same level. A full choice of weather conditions is available too.
The screen is a smallish 220° wraparound monster illuminated by 5 beamers at a refresh rate of 100Hz:

The platform itself can be equipped with the chosen full-size car body, and sits on electro-hydraulic legs that allow for 6 degrees of freedom. Add to that some realistic steering torque and the driving sensations must be incredibly close to reality!

That definitely makes the Playstation and Xbox games look a bit old in comparison...
